By 121 News

Chandigarh 30th August:- As many as 60 members of the District Bar Association, Panchkula attended a Max Hospital health session on 'preventing heart attacks: is it a choice anymore ' at Bar room of Distt Bar Association , Sector 1 here today.

Addressing members, Dr Amit Gupta, sr consultant, cardiology at Max Hospital Mohali said that lawyers and advocates are subject to the tremendous workload. Quite often conflict and hostility causes a toll on their mental and physical health.  Because of their hectic schedules and sedentary lifestyles, lawyers have been seen to suffer from stress, anxiety, fatigue and depression which are a dangerous risk factor for heart disease, as high blood pressure or even smoking.

Dr. Amit Gupta further said that it is important to recognize heart symptoms early on and to take corrective action on time. Many patients do not have chest pain, rather they have burning in chest which usually is mistaken as  gas problem or dyspepsia and keep on taking antacids . Sometimes cardiac problem can present only as breathlessness, sweating, jaw or back pain or shoulder pain and sometimes rarely as syncope or extreme weakness.

In such a situation going to the nearest doctor and getting a simple ECG at times can be lifesaving. More over it's advisable to be always ready for an emergency plan, pointed out Dr Gupta.

While cautioning young lawyers especially, Dr Amit Gupta said that latest statistics suggest that in India, there are roughly 30 million heart patients and two lakh surgeries are being performed every year. Nearly 2.4 million Indians die due to heart disease every year. Over 50 percent of patients suffering from heart attack die just because they are unable to reach the hospital in time.

Dr Amit Gupta  added that as a vulnerable society ,we need to stand up together to make healthy life style choices in order to prevent us from getting the disease ,rather than going to hospitals seeking options for its treatment.
