Chandigarh 01st July:- Celebrating the spirit of Bank Day and creating a synergy between the two apex institutions, State Bank of India joined hands with ROTTO PGI and launched an awareness campaign on Organ Donation at an impressive function organized at Local Head Office, Sector 17, Chandigarh today.

Prof. A K Gupta, MS-cum-Prof.  & Head, Dept. of Hospital Administration, PGI graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.  He was accompanied by Dr. Vipin Koushal, Additional Prof., Dept. of Hospital Administration & Nodal Officer, ROTTO PGI. Distinguished dignitaries present on the occasion from SBI included Anil Kishora, Chief General Manager, SBI, Venktesh Bhardwaj, GM Network 1, Manoj Khattar, GM Network 2, and Kumar Rajan, GM, Network 3 to name a few .

Addressing as Chief Guest to the hall full to its capacity, Prof A. K. Gupta complimented SBI for their commendable initiative on Organ Donation and  said that there cannot be a more apt day than 1st July being the Bank Day as well as the National Doctors' Day to launch this awareness campaign. This is rather the best way to celebrate both these obviously important days.

Endorsing the need for public awareness through his thought provoking address, Prof. A.K.Gupta, stated that as a country we have really lagged behind in putting in the confidence that the organs can be donated. So continuous and periodical sensitization on this altruistic cause of organ donation must be enhanced predominantly. The initiative taken by SBI to take forward this campaign to different states and regional offices is really a major step in this direction and will set an example for others to follow.

Prof. Gupta emphasized that the solution to organ shortage and achievement of self-sufficiency in organ donation is possible only through systematic strengthening of the deceased donor programme.

Sharing his concerns, Dr Vipin Koushal stated that the country really needs to improve the rate of organ donation. The Government has taken some positive steps regarding organ donation in the region by designating PGI as Regional Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) under National Organ & Tissue Transplant Programme (NOTP). However, synergized efforts and engagement of the civil society, religious leaders and other stakeholders are required for creating mass awareness about the cause.

Deliberating about the myths and misconceptions on the subject, Dr. Vipin Koushal highlighted that one person can save the life of about 8-10 persons; therefore organ donation is considered to be a true 'Gift of Life'. There is a positive change as people are coming forward but we have a long way to go. So every one's effort matters.

A presentation on the initiatives being undertaken by ROTTO PGI to promote Organ Donation was made, followed by showcasing of a motivational documentary on the success story of a liver recipient in PGI which left many in the hall with moist eyes.

Earlier, at the outset, Anil Kishora, CGM SBI administered the oath to all the SBI staff members to maintain the work ethics and raise the standard of customer service.

Concluding the session, Anil Kishora expressed his gratitude towards PGI for supporting their CSR endeavour. He assured of the Bank's commitment to take forward the awareness campaign to different states and regional offices, thereby connecting and sensitizing a large base of employees.

Commemorating the spirit, Prof Gupta gifted two paintings to Mr Kishora, made by school students on the theme of Organ Donation, as a token to reiterate the fact that 'circle of life' should not break.
