Orientation Workshop on Acute Stroke Management Held

Chandigarh 10^th July:- An orientation workshop on Acute Stroke Management was held today in the State Institute of Health & Family Welfare, Phase VI, Mohali. The workshop which was conducted by Dr. M V Padma Srivastava, Professor, Neurology, AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr. Dheeraj Khurana, Additional Professor, Neurology, PGI, Chandigarh & Dr. Jeyaraj D. Pandian, Professor, Neurology, CMC, Ludhiana for Medical Specialists, Emergency Medical Officers and Staff Nurses working in the district hospitals and doctors from State Medical Colleges.

While inaugurating the workshop, Ms. Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health & Family, Welfare, Punjab expressed gratitude towards the renowned specialists of Neurology from country's premier institute like All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh who specially came to attend the workshop to orientate the Medical Specialists, Emergency Medical Officers, other doctors and paramedics working in various Govt. hospitals of Punjab. She exhorted the participants to take full advantage out of the deliberations in the workshop which would help them a lot to improve survival of stroke patients in the State and handling similar emergencies in Punjab Govt. hospitals. She said with the help of PGI, Chandigarh such Continuous Medical Education (CME's) for various medical specialties' are regularly being organized since the past few months as refresher cum orientation programmes for doctors of Punjab Govt.  

Dr. K.K Talwar, Advisor, Health & Medical Education, Govt. of Punjab, addressed the participants of the workshop and shared his valuable experiences with them. He pointed out that similar to the cases of heart attack and trauma, it was equally important to give immediate emergency medical care to the patients of stroke to save lives. He lauded the role of AIIMS, Delhi, PGI, Chandigarh and other premier institutes of the region in imparting such CME's for further capacity building of doctors of the state.

During the workshop, the renowned Neurology experts pointed out that the incidence of stroke was more common than expected. According to studies it was known that in India every minute one person suffers from stroke. They stressed that it is extremely important to recognize symptoms of stroke early and initiate treatment immediately. They further emphasized that the districts hospitals should be strengthened for treatment of stroke so that more and more stroke patients can be saved. With the incidence of non-communicable diseases increasing in the younger age groups, early and rapid management of stroke was of utmost importance, added the experts.
