By 121 News

Chandigarh 06th April:- The UT State Marketing Board has allowed 'Apni Mandis' at a  dedicated spaces where farmers can sell their produce directly to the public, to be set up across the city from April 7 (Thursday). The location for these mandis would be the places where the Punjab Mandi Board also holds these markets, but these would be held on different days. The Chandigarh municipal corporation is already holding such mandis.

UT deputy commissioner cum-State Marketing Board secretary Ajit Balaji Joshi, while announcing the launch, said that UT adviser Parimal Rai will launch the first administration run mandi in Sector 34 at 4pm on Thursday (April 7). The mandis will function from 11am to 9pm. He said that we will ensure that farmers or vendors operating in the market use electronic scales. Only agricultural produce would be sold.

Ajit Balaji Joshi further said that rates at these mandis will be fixed by the Chandigarh Market Committee taking the wholesale rates in Sector-26 mandi as the base. Nominal transport charges will be added and the final rate list would be displayed. He added that several complaints had been received that vendors and at the existing apni mandis run by the MC sold underweight items.

Ajit Balaji Joshi said that vendors or farmers will be issued identity cards for free. The registration will be renewed every year in April. Unauthorized vendors will not be allowed. The DC added that 850 vendors had already registered themselves. A 3-member committee has been formed to monitor the functioning.

DC said that we hope to decongest the Sector-26 market and remove rehris. Cops will be deployed at the Sector-26 market to ensure that the one-way traffic system, we plan to introduce soon, is implemented.

Vendors would be provided with proper sanitation and drinking water at nominal charges ranging between ` 35 and ` 70. Violation of norms like overcharging or selling underweight items would invite cancellation of registration.
