Chandigarh Celebrates World TB Day 2016

Chandigarh 22nd March:- The World TB Day was inaugurated today at CD-CITCO by today Dr. Vandana Gupta, Medical Superintendent of GMSH-16, Chandigarh. She said that the chain of infection spreading TB has been broken and we are on our way to control TB from Chandigarh.

World Tuberculosis Day is globally celebrated on 24th March every year to commemorate the discovery of tubercular bacillus by Dr. Robert Koch. This discovery is a milestone in the history of tuberculosis. Koch's discovery opened new vision towards diagnosing and curing tuberculosis.

She further said that awareness about symptoms of TB, availability of diagnosis and free treatment has been generated due to which there has been a considerable decline in incidence of TB in Chandigarh. Having treated more than 30,000 TB patients, Health Deptt. Has been able to contain the spread of TB and is working hard to eliminate the disease from the soil of City Beautiful. With the implementation of DOTS Plus Programme, Multi-drug resistant TB patients have been able to get treatment of TB and live a good life.

Worthy Medical Superintendent urged upon the programme managers to concentrate on slum areas which are heavily inhabited by migratory TB patients and intensity the Campaign to educate the people to get diagnosed and take treatment which is available at their door-step.

Medical Superintendent of GMSH-16 praised the efforts of Programme Managers for bringing Chandigarh amongst best performing States in the Country for the last six years.  This achievement is significant which has been possible with the co-operation of various segments of Society like IMA, NGOs and NIMA Doctors, School Teachers, Social and religious activists.

State TB Officer, Dr. Rajiv Khaneja appreciated the efforts of Health Providers who are the pillers of the RNTCP Programme.  They help not only in reducing default rate but also motivate chest symptomatic for sputum test. He appealed to the residents of Civil Dispensary CITCO to make full utilization of Designated Microscopy Centre.

Multi-Media activities like Radio Jingles, Nukkar Natak, Puppet Show, Exhibitions, competitions in schools, community meetings have generated awareness and reduced TB incidence. Medical Superintendent honored the best workers and gave prizes to the students their performance painting competition organized in schools on Tuberculosis theme .
