OSSICON 2016 Concludes at in Chandigarh:New Technics and New Dimensions Discussed in the Conference

Chandigarh 15th February:- The annual conference of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of India OSSICON 2016, concluded at the Hotel JW Marriot, Chandigarh.

Giving detail about the Conference, Dr. Kuldeepak Singh Kular, Organising Chairman of the conference, informed that the biggest national conference of Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI), by International Federation of Surgeons for Obesity (IFSO) and under the auspices of Punjab Medical Council, was conducted in a very highly professional way and in a very congenial atmosphere. Dr. Kuldeepak Singh Kular, who is pioneer of Mini Gastric Bypass in India and is Director of Kular Hospitals Pvt. Ltd. Khanna, an executive member of OSSI and President of the International MGB Surgeons Club, further informed that about 450 surgeons from different countries of the World and from almost all the big cities of India attended the conference wherein the latest techniques, researches, modifications and innovations were discussed. Amongst eminent doctors who participated are: Dr. Robert Rutledge, (father of Mini Gastric Bypass) from US, Dr. Thomas Rogula (President IBC from US), Dr. David Hargroder, Dr. Chevalier (President of French Obesity Society), Dr. Kamal Mahawar, Dr. W.J. Lee and from India Dr. Pradeep Chowbey, Dr. Mahendra Narwaria, Dr. Shashank Shah, Dr. Mohit Bhandari, Dr. A K Attri. Apart from this, big companies like Johnson & Johnson, Medtronics, Karl Storz, Stryker and Bariatric Solutions from Switzerland also participated in the conference. For new and upcoming surgeons, training courses for Endoscopy (sponsored by Karl Storz) and many other surgeries like Mini Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Metabolic surgeries were held and a lot of enthusiasm was seen.

The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Charanjit Singh Atwal, Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha, who said that surgeons are the most important part of community and have a prominent role in curing the morbid obesity.

He further shared that live surgeries were successfully transmitted from Kular Hospitals Pvt. Ltd. Khanna, Istanbul, Chandigarh, Mumbai and Indore which was highly appreciated by the participants. Dr. K.S. Kular said that Mini Gastric Bypass surgery for weight loss which is becoming a promising procedure for weight loss as it can be accomplished in 20 to 25 minutes and patient can be discharged on very next day. With this surgery, on one hand patient's intake is decreased because of the decreased volume of the stomach and on the other hand, the absorption of the food and the fat is decreased because of the bypass. So this surgery is having dual component in the form of restriction and bypass.

An atlas on Bariatric Procedures compiled by Dr. Pullat C Rana was released by Dr. Pradeep Chowbey and presented to Dr. Kular as an honour of his services.

The conference was a great success because of consistent efforts by Dr. Kular and his team. He started this surgery in India 9 years back and has done maximum number of Mini Gastric Bypass surgeries in Asia. Dr. Kular, with experience of more than 2600 weight loss surgeries, added that all the participants were deeply convinced with the comforts and hospitality provided by the Punjabis, which is pride for Chandigarh and whole of Punjab. Alpcord Network was the Event Managers of the conference who did a commendable job.
