Chandigarh 06th January:- During the ongoing 103rd Indian Science Congress at Mysore, Prof.Arunaloke Chakrabarti, Head, Department of Medical Microbiology, PGI, Chandigarh received the prestigious B C Guha Memorial Award for his contribution in the field of fungal diseases. With a donation from Dr. (Mrs) Phulrenu Guha, wife of Late Professor B.C. Guha, this memorial lecture award was instituted in 1965 by the Indian Science Congress Association to honour an eminent scientist in the field of bioscience every year. Very few medical scientists received this award. Prof. Arunaloke Chakrabarti delivered the lecture on 'Challenges in the field of fungal disease in India' during the congress as part of the lecture award. Prof. Chakrabarti has published 251 papers in the field of fungal diseases and delivered more than 200 lectures in various scientific meeting nationally and internationally. He recently edited the book 'Fungal Infections in Asia-The Eastern Frontier of Mycology'. His major contribution is in the field of epidemiology of hospital acquired fungal infections, sporotrichosis, fungal sinusitis, and mucormycosis. His laboratory identified the endemic regions of many fungal diseases in India and helped in managing those cases. He is currently the President-elect of International Society for Human & Animal Mycology (ISHAM), Chair of 'Asian Fungal Working Group', Chair of 'Fungal Infection Study Forum', Coordinator of working groups on 'Fungal sinusitis' and 'ABPA in asthmatics'. He is Editor/Associate Editor/Deputy Editor of five international journals – Medical Mycology, Journal of Medical Microbiology, Mycoses, Current Fungal Infection Report and Medical Mycology Case Report.
