Prevention of Risk Factors of Non Communicable Diseases in Adolescents

Chandigarh 02nd December:-  Non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases like stroke, hypertension, Cancer and chronic lung diseases have surpassed infectious diseases as major killer of people worldwide. These diseases are also called lifestyle diseases because they are related to one's lifestyle. The unhealthy life styles and habits which are precursors of these diseases start from early adulthood only. Hence, a health talk on risk factors of non-communicable diseases and its prevention was organized at Guru Harkishan Singh School, Sec-38 by Department of Community Medicine, PGI. In this interactive talk, the doctors told the adolescent boys and girls about the 4 important risk factors i.e. tobacco in form of smokable and non-smokable , Alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity are the major causes of non-communicable diseases and their harmful effects on causation of these diseases were demonstrated through pictures and videos. They were advised to adopt healthy life styles like regular physical activity, healthy and balanced diet including fruits and vegetables and avoidance of junk foods. The students were also introduced and were learnt to calculate the BMI (Body Mass Index) to self monitor their risk of being overweight and obese according to the various cutoffs of BMI. Dr Abu Bashar , Junior Resident, PGI gave the talk and Showed videos and pictures on various risk factors. Around 50 students of class IXth attended session. Dr Lima, Senior Resident, PGI and Mrs. Rupinder, MPHW, Sec-38 dispensary were also present during the session.
