Bariatric Surgery No More a Complex Procedure: Experts

By 121 News

Chandigarh 08th August:- It was important to understand that diabetes associated with obesity was treatable while diabetes alone might not be completely treatable. Of the people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes over 60 % were obese. This was stated by Padma Shri awardee and a renowned Bariatric surgeon of country, Dr. Pradeep Chowbey during a press conference at Ludhiana today. Dr Vikas Ahluwalia, Director -Metabolic and Bariatric Medicine, Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Saket also accompanied Dr Chowbey. The both doctors were in city to attend MSSH obesity & diabetes camp as well a health talk in association with Rotary club & Sr Citizen Welfare Association, Ludhiana held at Rotary Club, Ludhiana today.

Dr. Chowbey said that patients with Body Mass Index(BMI) over 32.5kg/m2 combined with Type 2 diabetes should be recommended bariatric surgery or surgery for morbid obesity as an early intervention. Bariatric surgery was the most effective long-term treatment for obesity with the greatest chances for improvement and even resolution of obesity-associated complications. It was a life saving surgery and should not be confused with liposuction which was a cosmetic procedure. It was done by an endoscope and the patients were moving around on the same day of operation. Dr Chowbey further said that in India, 2-2.5 million people were obese. Out of which a whooping 40-60% were Type 2 diabetics. The country today was a ticking bomb of diabesity.  The first step towards preventing or controlling obesity was to understand what it would mean and how was it identified. We at Max Healthcare were committed to spread awareness about the burgeoning incidence of diabesity and how small and simple lifestyle changes could do wonders and keep people healthy.

Dr Vikas Ahluwalia informed that the traditional approach to treat Type 2 Diabetes has been step wise introduction of non medication approaches followed by oral medications and then finally insulin therapy. In the light of the escalating global diabetes crisis, the need of the hour was to identify surgical interventions that provide a long term metabolic outcome.

Many associated diseases like type II Diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea could also get corrected after bariatric surgery. Improved longevity was noted after bariatric procedures. Earlier bariatric surgical procedures were done with large incision on body but now with the help of laparoscopy (key hole) surgical techniques there was less tissue damage, quick post operative recovery and shorter hospital stay.
