Mayor inaugurates Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Bhawan

Chandigarh 09th March:-. Mayor of Chandigarh Mrs. Poonam Sharma, today inaugurated the Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Bhawan in Chandigarh on the International Women's Day. She was accompanied by Smt. Gurbax Rawat, Deputy Mayor, Smt. Harjinder Kaur, Chairperson, Women Empowerment Committee and Arun Sood, area Councillor.

On this occasion Mayor said that Municipal Corporation will dedicate this year to Women Empowerment year in Municipal Corporation and various welfare activities will be started for the women citizens of Chandigarh. She said that the first scheme for the women would be the allotment of booths to only women in newly developed market in Mauli Jagran. She urged the heads of various lying departments and leading govt. development agencies for coming up with a conversed plan on various women welfare and development activities to be housed in the Mahila Bhawan. She said that various vocational courses will be started in this Bhawan very soon such as computer training, laboratory, centre for women counseling (Family counseling, mental health counseling, HIV AIDS), free computer training programme for the house wives and old age people in the city in partnership with department of IT, Chandigarh. She said that various other courses will be started by other departments including regional centre, IGNU, Chandigarh for regional centre-cum-special women study centre, legal aid and counseling centre with state legal Authority, Chandigarh, a special project on homeless special children, disabled and mentally sick with department of psychiatry, GMCH-32, Chandigarh, women helpline, employment exchange and facilitation centre, women empowerment centre in collaboration with Social Welfare Department under National Mission on Women Empowerment, urban poverty resource centre under NULM. Poonam Sharma said that today's era is of women. There is not even a single field where we cannot find women proving their talent. She said "Aaj ki larki sirf ghar ki larki nahi hai…wo hai ek doctor, engineer, teacher, business women, CEO of big companies, political leaders, Navy merchant, army girl and what not…". She said that this Mahila Bhawan is mainly focused towards skill development, entrepreneurship development, capacity building, promotion of art and culture, health promotion activities for the women under a single roof.

Explaining about the infrastructure, Mukesh Anand, Chief Engineer said that total expenditure incurred to develop the building comes around Rs. 13.18 crore with construction of total plot area 56765 Sq. Ft. including 27416 Sq. Ft. basement for parking of around 79 cars, 21837 Sq. ft. in ground floor having Auditorium, Library, Exhibition hall, Gymnasium, Kitchen, Dining and toilet blocks etc., Conference centre, Fine Art Centre, Performing Art Incubation Centre, Counseling Room, Director Room, Accounts office in the first floor having 15863 Sq. Ft. area. In addition to that two lecture halls, Research wing, Entrepreneurship Development Centres, Care Taker, Manager and Visitor rooms in the second floor having 15284 Sq. Ft. area and in the 3rdfloor with 6080 Sq. Ft. area having seven visitor rooms, reception room and Terrace.

During the function Sarswati vandna was performed by famous kathak dancer and teacher Dr. Suchitra Mitra and " Thaana Kuriyan Da" skit was presented by team of Roopak Kala and Welfare Society, a team of MCM college, sector 36 on women empowerment. In addition to that a musical performance was organized by blind students from "Divine Eyes" group of National Association for the Blind, Chandigarh. Poems on women empowerment were also recited by prominent women poets from the city.
