Chandigarh 14th June:- The Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGI, Chandigarh celebrated World Blood Donor Day today by organizing three blood donation camps at "Blood Donation Complex" in Advance Trauma Centre in PGI, Chandigarh, Zakir Hall, PGI, Chandigarh (Thalassemia Children Welfare Association) and at Sector 25, Panchkula (Smile Forever organization). Voluntary blood donors were facilitated by mementoes, certificates and pens as a token of appreciation. Prominent blood donors who came to donate blood were Mr. Jai Singh (32 times), Mrs. Sneh Nagpal (21 times), Mr. Jagtar Singh Insan (26 times) and Mr. Satish Insan (20 times). On this occasion more than 300 donors donated their blood.
According to the spokesperson of the PGI the focus of this year's "World Blood Donor Day" campaign is "Safe blood for saving mothers". Severe bleeding during delivery and child birth is a major cause of maternal mortality, morbidity and long term disability. The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness about why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential for all countries as a part of comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths.
