International Workshop on ‘Chronic Total Occlusion’ Starts at Max Hospital

By 1 2 1 News Reporter
Mohali 29th April:-- The 2-day international workshop on treatment
options for CTO (Chronic Total Occlusion – 100% blocked arteries)
started at Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Mohali today. The
workshop was being conducted by Cardiology Department of MSSH in
conjunction with Dr Yasushi Asakura, Co-Director of Cardiovascular
Medicine Toyohashi Heart Center, Aichi in Japan.
Speaking during occasion, Dr Asakura said that now 100% blocked
arteries could be opened with angioplasty with bypass surgery was not
required so far. Japanese have developed highly specialised wires,
balloons and catheters that were specifically used for treating these
blocks. Since the Japanese believed that their soul would depart if
their chest was opened during surgery thus forcing them to avoid
bypass surgeries. That's why the technique has highly developed in
Japan, quipped Dr Asakura in lighter veins.
Dr Sudheer Saxena, Principal Consultant & Coordinator, Department of
Cardiology, MSSH said that 1/3 of the patients with blocks in their
coronary arteries have at least one artery that was completely
blocked. These 100% blocks would remain one of the main reasons for
referring a patient to undergo a bypass surgery. Performing an
angioplasty in these arteries required a high level of skill and
specialized hardware. Unlike the routine angioplasty, these blocks
were made up of hardened tissues that were difficult to cross using
routine guide wires and balloon catheters. He said, Retrograde
technique of opening of CTO has several benefits to the patient. The
most important was that the patient with one artery total blockage
would not require coronary artery bypass surgery. There would be less
medication required and the heart would function better and improve
the quality of life. This was a complex angioplasty method that was
being done at only a few centres in North India. This minimally
invasive technique which has to be performed by team of skilled
interventional cardiologists promised to offer the best possible
outcomes for patients with CTO. Also the impact of drug eluting stents
on restenosis has improved long-term outcomes after successful
re-canalisation in CTO. Successful revascularisation was associated
with improved long-term survival, reduced symptoms, improved left
ventricular function and reduced need for coronary bypass surgery.

North-west chapter of Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology Inagurates

By 1 2 1 News Reporter
Chandigarh 26th April:-- The Department of Medical Parasitology at
PGI, today organized a conference "Food Borne & Zoonotic Parasitic
Diseases of Human Importance" . The North-West Chapter of the Indian
Academy of Tropical Parasitology (IATP) was inaugurated on this day by
Prof. RC Mahajan, Emeritus Professor, PGIMER, and Advisor ECD, Indian
Council of Medical Research, New Delhi. Under the North-west chapter
of the Academy, regular scientific events in this region of the
country will be held.
Prof. Y. K. Chawla, Director PGI, presided the occasion as the Chief
Guest, amongst a gathering of about 200 delegates and eminent
scientists from India and abroad. Prof. Chawla in his inaugural
address stressed upon the huge burden of foodborne zoonotic parasitic
infections of human importance in India, and the significance of
holding such scientific meets.
Prof. Rakesh Sehgal, the Organizing Chairperson of the conference from
the Department of Medical Parasitologytold, "Of the 17 tropical
diseases identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as
'Neglected Tropical Diseases', 12 are parasitic diseases, and this
conference addresses a majority of these diseases, which have a
significant presence in our country. Prof. Sehgal told that parasites
have been a problem for human health since times immemorial and some
of them have shaped history of mankind, like malaria, which was
rampant throughout the world. Due to scientific advances, some viral
diseases like small pox have been eradicated but parasites remain with
us and still cause untold misery. Malaria still kills nearly a million
people annually, mostly in the poorer nations. Helminths infect more
than 2 billion population, again mainly in the developing nations.
Globally, an estimated 450 million people were infected with hookworm
in 2010, more than 800 million with Ascaris lumbricoides (Roundworm)
and 465 million with Trichuris trichiura. The vast majority of soil
transmitted helminth infections (67%) occur in Asia.
Experts in the conference were of the opinion that unhygienic living
conditions, lack of education, and poor infrastructure are the major
factors responsible for the high prevalence of foodborne infections in
India. In the scientific session of the conference, Prof. Mahajan
described the current scenario of parasitic infections in India and
was very positive that parasitic infections can be dealt with very
effectively in our country, "India has been successful in tackling
infectious diseases like small pox, guinea worm, and poliomyelitis
very effectively. Soon, Kala Azar will join the list of infections
eliminated from India", said Prof. Mahajan. Various aspects of
detection of food borne zoonotic parasites were discussed by Prof.
Lucy Robertson from Department of Food Safety & Infection Biology,
Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Norway. Prof. Nancy
Malla, former head of the Department of Medical Parasitology, PGIMER,
elaborated the perspectives of Human Hydatidosis in India, a diseases
transmitted by consumption of infected sheep meat. Prof. BR Mirdha,
Professor from AIIMS, apprised the delegates about the various
opportunistic parasitic infections in India. Prof. Jagat Kanwar from
Deakin University, Australia, described the use of nano-technology in
the development of new drug delivery systems which can be used for
these parasites. As 26th April is marked as the World Intellectual
Property Day and patenting system is highly neglected in India, Mr.
Rahul Taneja of the Patent Information Center, Department of Science
and Technology, Haryana, made aware the participants that India is far
behind in terms of Patent filing in healthcare as compared to other
countries such as United States of America, China, and European
Countries.
The conference was preceded by a Workshop on Zoonotic Parasites of
importance in India, in which the participants ranked the parasites
according to their importance on human health using the WHO ranking
methodology. It was observed that the most important foodborne
parasite in India is tapeworm, similar to the ranking of WHO which
also ranks tapeworm as the most important foodborne parasite across
the globe. The other parasites of importance were Cryptosporidum,
Entamoeba histolytica.amongst several others. This workshop was a part
of a three-year educational exchange project between India and Norway,
in which PGIMER's department of Medical Parasitology is the Indian
collaborator.
"The theme of the present conference, 'Food Borne and Zoonotic
Parasitic Diseases of Human Importance' was chosen as this is a highly
neglected area of research and it was only recently that the WHO has
thought that this is an important area which cannot be neglected. Data
from India are lacking and hence all available prevalence data are
gross underestimates of the actual burden of these diseases in the
Indian population", told Prof. Sehgal. The purpose of this conference
was to increase awareness among the participants on this neglected but
important disease.

International Workshop on Zoonotic Parasites:PGI Compiles Data To Fight Parasitic Infections

By 1 2 1 News Reporter
Chandigarh 23rd April:-- The 1st international "ZooPa" workshop on
'Zoonotic waterborne/ foodborne parasites' enters its second day on
Thursday at PGI, Chandigarh. This workshop kicks-off a three-year
educational exchange project between India and Norway, in which the
Department of Medical Parasitology, PGIMER, Chandigarh is the Indian
partner and the Department of Food Safety and Infection Biology,
Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is the Norwegian partner.
During the second day of the workshop, group discussions were
conducted about risk ranking of foodborne parasites in the context of
the Indian scenario.
Prof. Rakesh Sehgal, Head of the Department of Medical Parasitology,
PGIMER, highlighted the medical importance of zoonotic waterborne/
foodborne parasites. He emphasized that over 60 % of human pathogens
are considered to originate from animals. Prof. Lucy Robertson from
Norway discussed the concept of 'One Health and One Planet' – in which
human infections, animal infections, and environmental factors are
considered together. The importance of zoonotic infections, that is,
the infections which are transmitted from animals to humans, were also
addressed. The department of Medical Parasitology is also conducting
research with their Norwegian and Spanish partners to investigate the
effect of climatic change in transmission of waterborne parasites.
PGIMER is also compiling the data of routine stool examination for
parasitic ova/cyst for the last 50 years. The data will be analysed in
relation to climatic data and will be useful for modelling the affects
of climate change on transmission and in formulating guidelines for
the control of intestinal parasitic infections. Water samples will
also be collected and analyzed for parasites by specialized
techniques; as contaminated water is a common source of infection.
Globally, contaminated water is a serious problem that can cause
severe illness, disability and even death. Common water-related
diseases caused by parasites include amebiasis, cryptosporidiosis and
giardiasis. People become infected with these diseases when they
swallow water that has been contaminated by these parasites. Proper
sanitation and hygiene are essential for prevention of waterborne
illness.India possess a favourable environment for the transmission of
both known and novel diseases between animals and humans as it
harbours the second largest human populations and one of the world's
greatest densities of tropical livestock. Nevertheless, zoonoses
research and control in India is fragmented and systematic studies are
lacking. Zoonotic waterborne/ foodborne parasites can infect large
numbers of common people in India. Throughout India, problems of
foodborne parasitic zoonoses differ because of varied food habits.
Other factors such as unhygienic living conditions, lack of education,
poor personal hygiene and poverty also contribute to the dissemination
of parasitic infections. This workshop aims to promote integrated
zoonotic disease prevention and control among the medical and
veterinarian students. Many food outbreaks can be linked to zoonotic
parasites. Many different types of food can be contaminated by
parasites such as raw vegetables, meat, fish and dairy products. Many
factors in the modern world may promote transmission of foodborne
pathogens, including changes in dietary habits (such as eating raw
produce and salads), increased international travel, and greater
import of different food products. The ZooPa project is funded through
the UTFORSK programme of the Norwegian Centre for International
Cooperation in Education (SIU). As well as this first workshop, the
project will include further workshops in Chandigarh and Norway,
"hands-on" practical courses, and scientific exchanges. In subsequent
workshops hands-on training will be provided for the detection of
parasites in water and food samples. This will help in establishing an
epidemiological link between animal source and human infection, so
that preventive and control measures can be taken.
