Chandigarh 06th December:-MCM DAV College added another feather to its cap with the inauguration of Legal Literacy Cell in collaboration with Chandigarh State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) here today. Constituted with the objective of spreading legal awareness and sensitising students about various social issues, the inaugural session of the cell focussed on gender sensitisation.

Lal Chand, SLSA Member Secretary cum Judge, Permanent Lok Adalat, Advocate Alka Sharma, SLSA panel member and Law Officer Rajeshwar Singh were present on the launch of this unique initiative. Elaborating on the significance of legal literacy cell in colleges, Lal Chand said that these go a long way in nurturing students into law abiding citizens and make them raise their voice against injustice.

Speaking on gender sensitising, Advocate Alka Sharma said that suffering of women in the society can be attributed to ignorance of laws related to domestic violence, property inheritance, sexual harassment and so on. She said that the key to tackling this demon of women suppression lies in making the women conversant with the laws existing for their benefit. Rajeshwar Singh added that ignorance of law is no more a bliss and we must equip ourselves with legal literacy.

Stressing on the importance of informed citizenry for a better nation, MCM Principal Dr. Puneet Bedi said that this novel initiative will serve as a platform for spreading legal literacy among students so that they can participate in nation building in a more constructive manner.
