Chandigarh, 06th July:-- Vice President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Said that the Government is committed to strengthen initiatives taken in the past and introduce new ones to expand the reach of health care and work towards our long term objective of establishing a system of Universal Health Coverage in the country. Mohammad Hamid Ansari was in Chandigarh today as a Chief Guest during the Golden Jubilee Celebrations and 51st Foundation Day of PGIMER. Ten PGI employees were honoured by Hamid Ansari along with Sh. Azad by giving them appreciation certificates along with mementoes. Hon'ble Gulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and President of the Institute presided over the function. Hon'ble Santosh Chowdhary, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare was the Guest of Honour.
While speaking on this occasion Hamid Ansari congratulating the PGI fraternity and said,that the mission statement of the PGI as engraved in its logo is "service to the community, care of the needy and research for the good of all". It not only sums up the role and objective of this Institute but it also aptly defines what should be the guiding principle of the entire medical fraternity. By your exemplary work, you have set a fine example for others to follow. I congratulate all those who have been associated with the PGI, in the past and present, and have contributed to its growth and fame. Your collective effort and teamwork has enabled your institution to scale these towering heights in medical science and research."
While advocating good health care for all as part of development and nation building he said, "The Government is committed to strengthen initiatives taken in the past and introduce new ones to expand the reach of health care and work towards our long term objective of establishing a system of Universal Health Coverage in the country. This would involve substantial expansion and strengthening of the good quality and affordable public sector health care system;cenhancing availability of skilled human resources; increase in the health sector expenditure to 2.5% by end of 12th Plan; redesigning of financial and managerial systems to ensure more efficient utilisation of available resources; encouragement of cooperation between the public and private sector in achieving health goals; putting in place a strong and functioning regulatory system to supervise the quality of services delivered and control the cost of care."
Earlier Gulam Nabi Azad welcomed the Vice President for the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute and said, "I am glad that the Golden Jubilee has been celebrated in a manner befitting a premier institution, which has over the last five decades carved for itself a prominent place in the country in the areas of medical learning, patient care and research. The report of Golden Jubilee celebration year shows that every department of the institute has taken a lead in academic activities to disseminate knowledge and skill to medical fraternity across India. This goes with the mandate of the Institute of developing elaborate patterns of teaching in postgraduate medical education to meet the country's need for highly qualified medical teachers and specialists in all medical and surgical fields, to provide educational facilities for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity and undertake basic community based research." While informing the audience about the future development projects in PGI he said, "To enable the institute to cope with the tremendous patient rush from all over the country, a 250 bedded hospital is coming up in PGI Campus which will add more private rooms and 10 Operation Theatres at the Institute and will house, among other facilities, the expanded Oncology, ENT and Endocrinology departments. I have also given in-principle approval to PGIMER to develop a 300 bed satellite centre at Sangrur in Punjab which could be expanded to a 500 bed facility depending upon the case load. Further, a 100-bed satellite centre will also be set up in the border district of Ferozepur, to provide quality tertiary care to the people living in remote areas. I am also happy to announce the setting up of a "National Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Architecture" in PGI which will be offering Masters Programme in Health Facilities Planning and Designing and Health Care Engineering and Management. This institute, supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research, will be the first of its kind in South East Asia. In the Union budget this year, Rs. 635 crores has been allocated to the PGIMER overall to keep up its best tradition of service, education and research."
Prof. Yogesh Chawla, Director PGIMER earlier welcomed the guests and apprised the listeners about the latest in the Institute. He said "last year 19 lakh patients (8000 per day) attended our OPDs and 71000 were admitted. PGI imparts one of the best postgraduate trainings in the country. The Institute conducts 16 MD, 4 MS, 17 DM and 6 M.Ch. courses besides Dental, Nursing and Medical Technology courses. Since its inception, PGI has produced 4450 specialists, 1620 super-specialists and a large number of postgraduates in basic and allied sciences." While talking about the Institute's collaboration with other institutes for research urposes he said, "Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula has many important Central Academic and Research Institutions. We have the famous Panjab University across the road. Faculty of our Institute has started collaboration with these institutes and university. In the process, an important research hub is being developed in this part of the region. Our faculty is also collaborating with Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, other IITs and Central Scientific Instruments Organization to bring out innovations for patient care, which is very important for affordability and easy access for economically challenging population of the country."

Sh. Shivraj V. Patil, Hon'ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Chandigarh , Sh. Jagannath Pahadia, Hon'ble Governor of Haryana, Sh. Parkash Singh Badal, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Punjab Sh. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Haryana and Sh. Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court also joined in for the celebrations. Former Directors and Professors, Heads of Departments, faculty and other staff were also present on the occasion.
