Chandigarh,15th June: CBI DIG Mahesh Aggarwal, who courted controversy for his alleged involvement in leaking information of the CBI raid on former union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal's nephew Vijay Singla's residence in Sector 28, has been repatriated to his parent cadre Tamil Nadu.
Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, joined in Chandigarh on deputation in 2006 as an SP. He was later promoted to the rank of the DIG. Aggarwal will now be posted in Chennai.
Aggarwal remained in controversy for his alleged role in leaking the information of the CBI raid on the residence of Bansal's nephew.
However, the Delhi CBI had clarified that the agency had not ordered any internal inquiry against any of its officer following the allegation.
A CBI inspector posted in Chandigarh, who had challenged his transfer orders, had also submitted an affidavit before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) leveling allegations of information being leaked by Aggarwal. But, later CAT dismissed his petition.
The Chandigarh bench of CAT in its order had observed that apart from making vague allegations in the application, the applicant had failed to place on record any cogent material in support of the plea.
Sources said that Aggarwal had written to the CBI Director for his repatriation in January this year.
The CBI had unearthed some major cases during Aggarwal's tenure. These include the police recruitment scam and the PEC admission scam in 2009. The CBI had also arrested Raj Khurana, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, and BJP MLA from Rajpura, in 2011 in a corruption case. Besides, the agency had arrested Mohali Deputy Superintendent of Police Raka Gira for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a builder for settling his case. The CBI also exposed the PGI entrance test racket during Aggarwal's tenure.
