Chandigarh Dec.30, 2021:- The Swachhta Committee of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, organised Campus Cleanliness Drive using Gandhi Chhadi under the Innovation for Waste collector initiative. The primary aim of the drive was to promote cleanliness and waste segregation through the use of an innovative patented tool named as Gandhi Chhadi. H. R. Gandhar, Vice President, DAV College Managing Committee and Senior Governing Body Member of the college graced the occasion.
Lauding this initiative, H R Gandhar said that such activities further strengthen Gandhian ideals and motivated the students to imbibe the principles of Gandhian philosophy for progress of the nation. Over 50 student volunteers and 12 safai karamcharis participated in the drive. Gandhi Chhadi is a waste collection tool, recognised by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, that provides an efficient and hygienic way of collecting plastic, paper and similar waste without hand touching. The faculty involved demonstrated this simple waste collection tool and the idea behind it to the students who then actively participated in the cleanliness drive using this device. The cleanliness staff was also taught about its operation and motivated to use it on a daily basis in the campus.
In another accomplishment reflecting MCM's commitment to the cause of swachhta, students Ishmeet Kaur (BA II) and Cdt Aditi Joshi (BA II) won state level 1st prize in Jingle Competition and 2nd prize in Movie Competition, respectively, organised by Chandigarh Municipal Corporation under Swachh Sarvekshan 2022.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava informed that the college's commitment to swachhata earned it recognition at national level when the college was awarded Cleanest College (Residential Category) 2018 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. She added that over the years, the college has not let up its swachhta related initiatives and has ingrained a culture of cleanliness among its various stakeholders.
