World Health Day Celebrated at GGSCW-26

Chandigarh April 08, 2021:-  Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector-26, Chandigarh, celebrated World Health Day with ardour and zeal on April 7, 2021. To mark the day, three events were organised by different societies and departments of the college.

Vasudha, the Environment Society of the college organised an Expert Talk, sponsored by the Environment Department, Chandigarh Administration. The talk was delivered by Dr Simmi Malhotra, Senior Medical Officer, Manimajra, Chandigarh. The main objective of the talk was to enlighten the students and teachers about the significance of maintaining personal hygiene, which becomes even more crucial in the current scenario when the whole world has been shaken by Covid-19 pandemic. Dr Malhotra emphasized on the importance of washing hands regularly and properly as they are the biggest carriers of germs. She also stressed on the significance of exercise, especially yoga, for a healthy mind and body. She concluded her talk by stating, "Health is your best friend. Healthy body leads to a healthy mind". She also apprised the listeners on how simple modifications in diet and lifestyle can help promote overall health. Around 100 participants attended the event.

The Department of Home Science also organised an Expert Talk to create awareness about global health. The talk was delivered by experienced consultant and dietitian, Ms Pooja Dogra. The main theme of the event was "Building a Fairer, Healthier World." Ms Dogra discussed strategies to tackle inequalities among various sections of the population and the need to increase investment of the state in providing health care to marginalized sections. She further stressed that in light of the pandemic, it has become imperative to dissolve all kinds of boundaries and build a fairer and healthier world where there is equality in healthcare opportunities. Ms Dogra also highlighted the importance of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle practices for holistic health. Around 90 students attended the event. A slogan writing competition was also organised by the Department on the occasion.

The Department of Psychology organised a brochure making competition for its students to spread awareness regarding the importance of well-being. The theme for the competition was 'Building a fairer, healthier world'. The students were also taught various techniques of mindfulness.

The Principal, Dr Jatinder Kaur, appreciated the efforts of the departments in organising the events and thanked the experts for enlightening the students about this vital and compelling topic.
