Chandigarh 22nd February:- The 7th National Conference of Indian Association of Paediatric Anaesthesiologists organised by the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at PGIMER concluded today. More than 350 faculty and delegates including practicing and trainee paediatric anaesthesiologists attended the conference. Children with endocrine diseases such as diabetes, tumours of adrenal gland pose difficulties when undergoing surgeries and require special considerations and techniques for anaesthesia. These were discussed by Drs. Navdeep Sethi and S Rajeshwari (New Delhi), and Vibhavari Naik (Hyderabad).
Dr. Purnima Dhar (New Delhi), M Subrahmanyam (Hyderabad) and Rajiv Gambhir (Denmark) elaborated upon Multiwavelength pulse oximetry, Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist mode and electronic anaesthesia record which are some of the newer technologies contributing to improved patient care and documentation. The role of simulation in medical education and training was also discussed.
Newborn are not just different from older children in their body structure and function. Many surgical conditions occur exclusively in these babies. Anaesthetic care needs to be tailored as described by Drs Rashmi Datta and Anjolie Chhabra (New Delhi), Deepak Chawla (Chandigarh) and Lakshmi Kumar (Kochi).
Pain after surgery is not only distressing to the child and its parents, but also causes harmful changes in the child's body. Thus there is a great need to ensure that pain is prevented and treated well in children undergoing surgery. A session with Drs. Nandini Dave (Mumbai), Chirag Ahuja (Chandigahr) and Rakhi Khemka (Kolkatta) was devoted to this topic.
A hands-on workshop on difficult airway and its management for trainees in paediatric anaesthesia was conducted in the afternoon by a team of experts led by Dr. Aman Kalra (USA).
